Downgrade iOS 3.1.3 to 3.1.2

If you want to downgrade your device, for one reason or another, you in for a fight form Apple. Luckily, though, Saurik hosts his own firmware certificates that will fool iTunes into thinking that your downgrade is accepted.

Read: You must have the ECID SHSH certificate was specifically created for your device. This SHSH file needed to be created while you were in a previous jailbroken firmware. You cannot download someone else's SHSH file for this process.

  1. Download the 3.1.2 firmware file from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/. Select your device and (3.1.2/7D11) file from the second drop-down bar.
  2. If you are on a Windows machine, navigate to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ and open the Hosts file in Notepad.
If you are on a Mac, navigate to /etc/ and open the Hosts file in TextEdit.
  3. At the very end of the file, add this as a new line: 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com. (This changes the server iTunes checks to Saurik's own.)
  4. Put your device into Recovery Mode: Turn off your device and make sure it is not plugged into your computer. Hold down your home button and plug in the USB. When the Connect To iTunes logo comes up on your device, then you can let go of the home button.
  5. Open iTunes.
  6. If on a Windows machine, hold the Shift key and click Restore.
If on a Mac, hold Alt, and click Restore.
  7. Now select the firmware file that was downloaded in Step One.
  8. iTunes will now downgrade your device.

Once you're on firmware 3.1.3, you can now jailbreak. Click here for a guide on how to jailbreak on 3.1.3.

US Library of Congress Officially Legalizes Jailbreak

The United States Library of Congress has added anti-circumvention exceptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that now states that jailbreaking is not a violation of copyright law - Apple's main argument against jailbreaking.

Some of the cost compelling quotes from the 250-page recommendation:
Ultimately, Apple’s position with respect to harm to the market for and value of its firmware boils down to Apple’s conclusion that “the value of the iPhone, and hence the software embedded in it, is substantially diminished when the integrity and functionality of that software is compromised by jailbreaking, when Apple is left to deal with the problems that ensue, and when the positive feedback loops enabled by the App Store and the iPhone Developer Program are compromised.”

Apple’s objections to the installation and use of “unapproved” applications appears to have nothing to do with its interests as the owner of copyrights in the computer programs embodied in the iPhone, and running the unapproved applications has no adverse effect on those interests. Rather, its objections relate to its interests as a manufacturer and distributor of a device, the iPhone.
The recommendation does not only apply to Apple devices. Android powered phones, like the Driod and HTC phones, can also be jailbroken (A.K.A. rooted).

Though this does not mean that Apple will stop jailbreakers by issuing updates for holes in software.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, the largest group fighting for a "free" electronic world, estimates that there are about 1 million jailbroken iDevices. This number will likely only continue to increase because of this recommendation.

Downgrade iOS 4.0 to 3.1.3

Apple's newly released iOS 4.0 can be a burden if you have an older device that has a harder time loading multitasking. If you're not happy with iOS 4.0, you have the option to downgrade to 3.1.3. Apple will not allow you to downgrade without giving you a fight. The steps below will get you though Apple's tough downgrade policy.

Read: You must have the ECID SHSH certificate was specifically created for your device. This SHSH file needed to be created while you were in a 3.x.x firmware. You cannot download someone else's SHSH file for this process.

  1. Download the 3.1.3 firmware file from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/. Select your device and (3.1.3/7E18) file from the second drop-down bar.

Activate iPhone without Original SIM (Hacktivate)

Sherif Hashim has found a simple solution to a widespread and difficult to solve problem for all iPhone users, activation.

If you've bought an iPhone, you know that once you open it up, it doesn't start up like and begin working, Apple requires that you insert your AT&T SIM card and then verify it with iTunes, this can be a hassle to get around if you bought the iPhone without a contract from AT&T.

The process of activating the phone without using an AT&T SIM card is known as 'hacktivating'. Previously, jailbreaking was needed to hacktivate the iPhone.

Sherif Hashim's solution is to use a Phonebook SIM to active your iPhone. This kind of a SIM card can be found at a local electronics store like Radioshack (or you can even borrow it from them and not have to pay for it). The one Hashim used can be found here, but any kind will work.

This works for any kind of iPhone including iPhone 2G (original), iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4.

iPhone 4 Conference: Q & A

Q: Are you doing anything else to address the issue? Perhaps changing hardware?
A: You know, the 3GS has the same problem. We're getting reports from customers that this is better than the 3GS. So I don't know changing the antenna design would help -- I don't know what our next antenna design will look like.

Q: I can't get my Bold to drop right now, maybe you can show me how to do it?
A: You may not see it in certain areas.

Q: You showed people almost covering the entire phone in their hand, but on the iPhone 4 it can happen with just a touch. Can you explain that difference?
A: When you touch the phone, you put yourself between the signal and your phone, so when you touch that spot you can attenuate the signal, and if you grip it with your whole hand, you can attenuate it even more. We don't build phones with an antenna on top...

Q: Were you told about the design before the phone was released?
A: Are you talking about the Bloomberg article? That's a crock, and we've challenged them to show proof that that. If anyone had said this thing has problems, we would have dispatched people to deal with that issue.

Q: Are you willing to make an apology to investors?
A: You know we hear from customers who love this phone and have a great experience with it, and we're doing a lot to help them with any issues they're seeing. To investors, you know, you invest in the company we are, so if the stock goes down $5... I don't think I owe them an apology.

Q: Do you think you're making users choose between form and function?
A: No, we strive to do both. For instance, we make the phone smaller, so it fits well in your pocket... the Retina Display... it's like a fine printed book, it blows away other displays. It costs a little more, but we made it work. The iPhone 4 is an exterior antenna, so it doesn't live inside the case, we have a larger battery for better battery life. We try to have our cake and eat it too, we try to have great design and great performance.

Q: Will there be refunds for AT&T contracts?
A: I believe so, yes.

Q: Is there anything you could have said in the launch keynote to lower expectations?
A: Not really. We could have said "hey if you hold the phone in this certain way you might see some signal attenuation..." We're human. We make mistakes, and we figure it out fast. That's why we have the best and most loyal customers in the world.

Q: On the September 30th date, is that to let people know that you'll have to buy a case?
A: Not really, we'll reevaluate then. Maybe we'll have a better idea. Maybe Eminem will come out with a band-aid that goes over the corner and everyone will want that.

Q: Will the refund include third party cases?
A: There's a very small number of third party cases out there. So no.

Q: Well it's interesting, there aren't any cases out there, and it's hard to get cases now. If the third party case buyers can produce a receipt, why not give them one?
A: It's really simple, if we tell people what our next product is, they stop buying our current products. Sometimes websites buy stolen property and they get out there... and case makers have a history of showing off their new cases for our new products. The case vendors haven't had a history of helping to keep our work under wraps.

Q: Do any of you use the cases? I don't.
A: Well I don't. And I get better reception, I hold it like this [death grip] and never see problems.

Q: Is there a hardware redesign in this generation that could fix this problem?
A: You can go on the web and look at pictures of Nokia phones that ship with stickers on the back that say "don't touch here" -- you can go on YouTube and see these. We should you three phones today, all good phones. So right now the state of the art of the entire industry is that no one has solved this problem. Would I like Apple to be first? Yes. Can we make it better right now? Maybe, we'll see.

iPhone 4 Conference: Free Cases/Return iPhone

Steve has announced that Apple will be giving away free cases (not necessarily Bumpers, as Apple can't make enough) to help solve the antenna issue that seems to be affecting only a very small percentage of people ( about .5%)

iPhone 4.0.1, iPad 3.2.1 Firmware Released

After yesterdays private release of iOS 4.1 to Apple Developers, Apple has now released iOS 4.0.1 to the general public.

The 4.0.1 update is for iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. This update includes the new, improved formula for calculating signal strength, though no real change has been observed.

A 3.2.1 update for iPad has also be released fixing Wi-Fi issues among other things:
Fixed an issue that could prevent copy and paste of single-page PDF attachments in Mail
Addressed an issue that could cause video playback to freeze
Improved reliability of video-out when using iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter
Added Bing as an option for Safari's search field
Jailbreakers beware, don't update your device until an official jailbreak is out.

iPhone 4 Press Conference this Friday

Engadget, among others, are reporting that Apple will be holding a press conference to talk about  none other than the iPhone 4s antenna issues.
Apple on Wednesday invited select press to a special press conference to be held this Friday in California. Apple would only say that the press conference would be regarding the iPhone 4. No other information was available when I spoke with them tonight.
The conference will be held this Friday July 16th, 2010, 10AM PT.

iOS 4.1 Beta Released for Developers

The long-awaited update to iOS 4.0 is showing signs that it will soon be released to the public. iOS 4.1 is now available for Registered Developers to download in the Apple Developer Center

The update has been confirmed to fix the reception problems commonly found with the iPhone 4 (and some older devices) when held with a death grip.
The change will adopt a recently recommended formula from AT&T that will more accurately display actual signal strength at any given time. The update will also increase the size of the smaller bars (1, 2, and 3) to make them easier to see.

Though Apple claims that this update should solve reception issues, many are claiming that the issues are much larger than just software - they could be a result of the new antenna design.

If you are jailbroken on iOS 4.0, don't update to 4.1 until an official jailbreak is released.

Update: MobileCrunch has tested the new iOS 4.1 and it in-fact does not fix the iPhone 4's reception issues.

EightOS Theme

EightOS by Nick Knight and Brendon Cunnigham is intended to be a complete theme for your device, coating almost every aspect of your device. EightOS comes in trial and full versions each with their own variety of six colors to uniquely coat your device.

EightOS was inspired by:
First, graphically by a Rainmeter UI called Omnimous. I have mainly taken the look of this UI as an influence (yes it is a lot like Windows 7 Mobile) as it is simple, functional and looks amazing!
Second, Navigationally (and idealistically) by K.Nitsua & Zaussers Inspired OS which unless you have been living under a mountain is one of the most amazingly different OS changes to the iPhone I have ever seen. The main things I have taken from iOS are the navigation concept and layout. By Entombed Sh4dw

How to Install this Theme
  1. Make sure you are jailbroken. (How do I do that?) And that you are on or at an above firmware of 3.0. (How do I check?)
  2. Make sure you have downloaded Winterboard, Iconoclasm, Categories, and 5IconDock.
  3. Download the theme: Default Blue, Deep Blue, Green Tonic, Traffic Red, Neon Pink, xSURPx Red.
  4. Decompress the theme, place the folders (the folder name should end with .theme) into /private/var/stash/Themes.xxxxxx/
  5. Open Winterboard, drag the theme to the very top and tap on it to give it a check mark.
  6. Press your home button and let your device respring.

Update: Check out how to get Frash for your iPad or iPhone 3GS here!

Comex, the creator of the Spirit jailbreak, has released more details on his port for Flash 10.1 to iPhones and iPads (and possibly iPod touches).

The name for this Flash port has been called 'Frash'.

The description for the newest YouTube video reads:
Frash is a port of the Adobe Flash runtime for Android to the iPhone, using a compatibility layer. Frash can currently run most Flash programs natively in the MobileSafari browser. Frash currently only runs on the iPad, but support for other devices (3GS+ only due to technical restrictions) is planned, as well as support for iOS 4.
The port is completely open sourced and is avaiable for developers to download now and test on their own and suggest improvements for it: http://github.com/comex/frash
