Apple will Stream 2010 Event Live!

For the first time in a very long time, Apple has decided that it will be streaming its 2010 music-themed event live over their own networks!
Apple will broadcast its September 1 event online using Apple’s industry-leading HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards. Viewing requires either a Mac running Safari on Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard, an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad. The live broadcast will begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT on September 1, 2010 at www.apple.com.
Is this a sign that Apple's planning something really big?

iPod Nano 6th Gen Mockup

These mockups, of the soon expected iPod Nano 6th Generation, by Mark Krenn are almost too good to be true.

They feature an iPhone 4-style border and seem to look very similar to a slice of the current Nano.

New Nano, iPod touch Touch Screens

A new video, by what seems to be a Chineese insider, shows the supposedly new iPod Nano and iPod touch touch screens.

The Nano screen shows what most have expected, a mini version of the iPod touch that won't likely be able to fit much more than one finger on. The controls will likely be large or even accelerometer to make up for the small screen.

The iPod touch screen shows a iPhone 4-similar FaceTime camera hole. It may be made of the same Gorilla Glass as the iPhone 4's front and back are. The screen also seems to have another hole on the left side, this may be improved placement of the ambient light sensor.

iPhone 4 vs. HTC HD2 Vs. Nexus One vs. LG Panther Boot Up

Pocketnow, a smartphone review site, has compared the boot speed of the iPhone 4, running iOS , the HTC HD2, Nexus One, running Android 2.2, and the LG Panther running Windows Phone 7.

Description from Pocketnow:
In this video we compare the startup time of Windows Phone 7 with Windows Mobile, iPhone, and Android. As a reminder, we're testing on non-final Windows Phone 7 hardware and software. Remarkably, Windows Phone 7 starts up in almost half the time of all of the other smartphone operating systems. Since most people leave their phones turned on all the time, startup time is not that big of a deal, but when the time is under 30 seconds (as is the case with Windows Phone 7, this build at least), it's worth mentioning.

Though the Windows Mobile 7 phones in the video booted up faster than the Android and iPhone, the commenters at iPhone Hacks have pointed out that a variety of factors such as media installed, customizations, and caches could have very well affected every one of the phones.

Unicom to Jailbreak iPhones for You?

Reports from Chinas cellphone carrier, Unicom, say that will be offering a jailbreak, along with some other extra features.

The image above says
Support Service: Free SIM-trimming, jailbreak, installation of more than 10 hot apps.
The posters also show that a jailbreak will also be provided for the iPad.

With 4.0.2 stopping the JailbreakMe.com jailbreak, it will be interesting to see how Unicom would jailbreak these devices or provide only older firmware devices.

Since jailbreaks are readily available and provided free to everybody, it may be the deal-breaker for cellphone buyers bringing in more profit for Unicom.

It will be interesting to see how Apple will react to this information.

Netflix for iPhone and iPod touch Released

Netflix had previously released its app for the iPad, it has now finally released its app for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The app is now on the App Store for free but it requires that you have a membership with Netflix. If you don't have a membership, you can start a free trail with Netflix.

You can stream movies directly from the Netflix app through Wi-Fi or a cellular network. In addition, the app also allows you to resume watching the movie on your TV or computer.

September 1 Apple Event Announced

Apple has finally announced its annual September event. The musically themed event will be held in San Francisco.

This event is usually the site where Apple reveals its new iPods.

This year could reveal the new iTV, the fourth genration iPod touch (with a camera), a new iPod shuffle, and possibly updates to iTunes and the store.

Though like every thing else Apple does, what this event has in store won't be known until September 1st.

Apple to Disable iDevices at Own Will?

Even after the US Congress made it clear that jailbreaking the iPhone was not under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), Apple still doesn't want to go down without a fight.

Apple has applied for a patent which would allow them to see into an iDevice, such as taking screenshots and recording GPS position, and allow them to disable the device if it were doing something it deems wrong.

The actual patent:
[0060]To detect an unauthorized user, process 610 of FIG. 6b can determine whether particular activities are identified at step 612. As described above, the particular activities can include any activities indicating suspicious behavior such as, for example, entering an incorrect password a predetermined number of times in a row, entering an incorrect password a predetermined number of times within a period of time, hacking the electronic device, jailbreaking the electronic device, unlocking of the electronic device, removing a SIM card from the electronic device, moving the electronic device a predetermined distance from a synced device, or any combination of the above. If a particular activity is identified, the current user can be detected as an unauthorized user at step 614. If, however, a particular activity is not identified, process 610 can end at step 616.
Hopefully if this is ever released, jailbreakers will be able to come up with a solution to disable this 'kill-switch'.

Mystery White iPhone Unboxing

Since the iPhone 4 was released back in late June, users have been waiting for the promised white iPhone. It has since been delayed time and time again, many citing the reason as being because the white color needed to be thicker.

Now a new video has surfaced showing a fully boxed white iPhone being unboxed and shown-off.

Sony takes aim at iPhone, App Store

It is becoming apparent that the iPhone, iPod touch, and App Store have been taking a jab at Sony's profit margin.

Now, Sony has started a new ad campaign featuring Marcus, a smack-talking teenager, promoting the PSP.

The commercials directly attack the iPhone and the App Store containing 'Lame Games.' The commercials promote the PSP's cheap, older games for $9.99 which are intended to rival the App Store's many apps priced as free or $0.99.

How to Easily Free up Memory

Apple's release of iOS 4 brings multitasking, though this can be helpful in some situations, it can get annoying that apps that you have only opened for a moment are left running in the background, taking up valuable resources and speeding up the drain on your battery.

The jailbreak add-on for SBSettings, Processes, aims to solve this problem by giving the user an easier way to close apps running in the background. Processes even goes farther than closing apps by closing up unneeded services and resources.

  1. Make sure you are jailbroken. (How do I do that?) And that you are on or at an above firmware of 3.0. (How do I check?)
  2. Open Cydia, go to Search, type in SBSettings. Download and install SBSettings. (Respring device if necessary).
  3. Now slide your finder from left to right on the statusbar (the bar found at the very top section of the screen).
  4. Tap on More (middle-left section of the screen).
  5. Now, tap on Set Toggles.
  6. Turn on Processes.
  7. Press the home button and let your device respring.
  8. Open SBSettings, tap on the Processes icon.
Once you've accessed the Processes section, you can close out apps easily and the press FREE UP MEMORY at the bottom to clear out your free memory in 5 seconds.

Jailbreak iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G on 4.0.2

Is this not the right jailbreak for you? Find the one made for your device and firmware by clicking here.

The newly released Apple firmware 4.0.2 fixes the PDF security hole that was used by JailbreakMe to jailbreak without the use of a computer. Though JailbreakMe does not jailbreak 4.0.2, Redsn0w is able to jailbreak iPhone 3G, and iPod touch 2G (non-MC model).

  1. Make sure you are on firmware 4.0.2 by going into the Settings app, General, About, then down to Version. If you're not on 4.0.2, go into iTunes and click the Update button.
  2. (Skip this step if using iPhone 3G) While you're there, scroll down to Model, if the first two letters start with MC, this jailbreak will not work for you. If the Model starts with something else (MB, etc.) you're fine.
  3. Download Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 for Windows | Download Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 for Mac
  4. (Skip this step if using iPhone 3G) Download the iOS 4.0 firmware file by going here, clicking on the second drop down bar, and finding iPod touch 2G (4.0/8A293).(This is not a mistake)
  5. (Skip this step if using iPod touch 2G) Download the iOS 4.0 firmware file by going here, clicking on the second drop down bar, and finding iPhone 3G (4.0/8A293).(This is not a mistake)
  6. Open Reds0w and click the Browse button. Point it to the file you downloaded from one of the two above steps. Click Next.
  7. Make sure Install Cydia is checked and click Next
  8. Plug your device into your computer and turn it fully off. Click Next.
  9. Now be ready to follow the on-screen instructions. They will tell you what to do with your buttons. Make sure you follow them properly. (If you think you've messed up, stop, close Redsn0w, and hold down both home and power buttons for about 15 seconds until your device restarts. Then repeat above steps.)
  10. Now wait until Redsn0w is finished doing its thing.

Suave Theme

The Suave theme by Thyraz combines simpicity with elegance with its simple rounded icons and matte style. This theme very closely resembles Matte Nano, a theme by Shubham Kedia. Suave features an included wallpaper, over 130 icons, status bar, icon overlays, and page indicators.

The minimalistic theme won't hog the large amounts of resources that other larger themes will. The small icons allow you to add Five Column Springboard (see below) to fit more icons on to each page of your homescreen.

How to Install this Theme

  1. Make sure you are jailbroken. (How do I do that?) And that you are on or at an above firmware of 3.0. (How do I check?)
  2. Make sure you have downloaded Winterboard. Five-Column Springboard and five icon dock are optional downloads.
  3. Download the theme by clicking here.
  4. Decompress the theme, place the folders (the folder name should end with .theme) into /private/var/stash/Themes.xxxxxx/
  5. Open Winterboard, drag the theme to the very top and tap on it to give it a check mark.
  6. Press your home button and let your device respring.
  7. Open Cydia, go to Manage, Sources, Edit, then Add. Type in http://repo.beyouriphone.com/.
  8. Now go to Search, type in Suave SBSettings and install it.

How to Install Frash - Flash Player for Newer Devices (Update)

Earlier this week, Comex gave us another preview to Frash - a port of Flash from Android devices to the iPad.

Now you can install Frash to your iPad, iPhone 3GS, or newer device. The current build of Frash contains some bugs like not being able to play Flash video but it almost perfectly plays Flash games.

Update: Frash has been ported for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB), and also iPod touch 2G (MC models).

1. Make sure you are jailbroken. (How do I do that?)

2. Download the Frash (a Google search of frash-0.01.deb will get you the file). If you are installing Frash on any device besides iPad, use frash-0.02.deb.
3. Open your device through OpenSSH (How do I do that?)

4. Navigate to /var/root/Media.

5. Now create a new folder called "Cydia". Open that folder.

6. Create a new folder inside of Cydia called "AutoInstall".

7. Copy the downloaded frash.deb file into the AutoInstall folder.

8. Fully restart your device (you may have to do it more than once if it doesn't work the first time)

9. Now open Safari and go to a site with Flash content, an "F" will come up where the Flash content should be. Tap on the F to start the Flash content.
