Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad for Dummies

With so many guides, programs, and downloads, it can get pretty confusing to a first time jailbreaker on what to do. That's why this page was setup!

Although we recommend that you upgrade to the latest firmware before jailbreaking, jailbreaks for almost all combination of firmwares, devices, and computers are out. Just match your device and firmware with the one provided below. This will take you to the page with the full guide on how to jailbreak your specific model of iPod/iPhone.

To check the firmware of your device, go to Settings, General, About, and scroll down to Version.

To the the model of your device, go to Settings, General, About, and scroll down to Model. The first two letters of the Model are what is being reffered to in the chart.

Jailbreak on 3.1.2 with blackra1n

Geohot has released blackra1n RC3 which now jailbreaks all iPod touches and iPhones (including iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3rd Generation).

This jailbreak will not allow iPhone users to unlock for use on other carriers so if you rely on an unlock, stay with firmware 3.1.1.

For iPod touch 3rd Generation, the jailbreak is tethered so every time you fully turn off your device, you'll need to plug it back in and repeat steps 2-5.

  1. Make sure you're on firmware 3.1.2 by going into Settings, General, About, and then Version.
  2. Download and open blackra1n RC3:
    Windows - http://theipodtouchproject.googlecode.com/files/blackra1n.exe
    3. Mac - http://theipodtouchproject.googlecode.com/files/blackra1n.zip
  3. Plug in your device into your computer.
  4. Press Make it ra1n on your computer.
  5. Wait until the an image of a man with iPhone's spinning around him comes up. If you don't get the image, just restart your device, close blackra1n, and repeat steps 3 and 4.
  6. Once your device reboots, you should see a blackra1n icon on your homescreen, tap on it.
  7. Make sure you're connected to the internet, select Cydia, and tap on install.
  8. Blackra1n will now download and install Cydia, once it's done, Cydia will be on your homescreen.

    Blackra1n released by GeoHotz is the first official 3.x.x firmware jailbreak for Windows and Mac. It is also the first jailbreak for iPod touch 3rd Generation! This is quick one-click jailbreak. No need choose settings or go into DFU or Restore mode. Just plug it in and hit "Make it ra1n" on your computer.

    Devices Supported: iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G [S], iPod touch 1st Gen, iPod touch 2nd Gen, and iPod touch 3rd Gen
