Ever since the United States Library of Congress confirmed that jailbreaking was completely legal, many rejoiced at this ruling, calling it a new era of jailbreaking. But up until now, we have not seen any of the direct effects of this ruling on jailbreaking. Apple still refuses to allow users to jailbreak and patches any system vulnerabilities with OS updates.
Now, the first large corporation has entered the jailbreaking community.Toyota has released a theme under their Scion brand into Cydia under the ModMyi repository. The theme utilizes the full extent of the jailbreaking app Winterboard with custom icons, carrier logo, wallpapers, and sliders.
With an estimated number of 10-15 million users with a jailbroken iPod, iPhone, or iPad, other companies may submit themes into Cydia to advertise their product. This means that Apple may have to eventually recognize the significance of the open source iOS device. This also could mean that other companies that create products that are high in demand (like Adobe Flash) may come to Cydia to distribute their apps because Apple does not allow them into the App Store.
Either way, it seems like it is a win-win situation for the jailbreakers and the companies making themes. The future looks bright for all those who jailbreak.

Adding Themes to iPod touch/iPhone without Jailbreaking

Guide
- Download and install iPhone Explorer (supports Mac and PC).
- Plug your device into your computer via USB cord.
- On the left side of iPhone Explorer, you will see a folder directory. Go to iPhone/Apps/(name of app you want to change) / /(name of app you want to change).app/. For example: MyiPhone/Apps/Safari/Safari.app/
- There, you will see a file named icon@2x.png. Rename this to bakicon@2x.png. This is so that if something goes wrong, you will have the original icon still in your device to revert back to.
- Now get the icon you want to change the original Safari to (you can get themes by clicking here). It should be on your desktop, rename it to icon@2x.png
- Take that file from your desktop and drop it into iPhone Explorer.
- If it is the first time you are doing this, reboot your device and make sure it works or else keep repeating steps 3-6 for every app you have.

Hackers Able to Install Cracked Apps without Jailbreak

The app, named IPA God, is created by iModZone. The App claims to be able to installed illegal (cracked) applications on to iDevices such as the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running an iOS 4.1 or higher. Though it's highly unlikely that it is a fake, as the site has a farily well standing, many are calling bluff on IPA God.
Though you may say, big deal, Installous already installs cracked ipa on iDevices. This is true, but IPA God is claimed to be the first app to install ipa's without the use of a jailbreak. This greatly expands the scope of people who will use this app instead of 'risking' their devices to jailbreak.
Ironically, the app will be available to purchase for $20.
i-Enthusiast was able to get a short interview with the developer of IPA God himself, details are shady but the developer has confirmed to chpwn that it is the real-deal. IPA God will be avaiable 'soon'.

Unicom to Jailbreak iPhones for You?
Reports from Chinas cellphone carrier, Unicom, say that will be offering a jailbreak, along with some other extra features.
With 4.0.2 stopping the JailbreakMe.com jailbreak, it will be interesting to see how Unicom would jailbreak these devices or provide only older firmware devices.
Since jailbreaks are readily available and provided free to everybody, it may be the deal-breaker for cellphone buyers bringing in more profit for Unicom.
It will be interesting to see how Apple will react to this information.

The image above says
Support Service: Free SIM-trimming, jailbreak, installation of more than 10 hot apps. The posters also show that a jailbreak will also be provided for the iPad.

Jailbreak iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G on 4.0.2
Is this not the right jailbreak for you? Find the one made for your device and firmware by clicking here.

The newly released Apple firmware 4.0.2 fixes the PDF security hole that was used by JailbreakMe to jailbreak without the use of a computer. Though JailbreakMe does not jailbreak 4.0.2, Redsn0w is able to jailbreak iPhone 3G, and iPod touch 2G (non-MC model).
- Make sure you are on firmware 4.0.2 by going into the Settings app, General, About, then down to Version. If you're not on 4.0.2, go into iTunes and click the Update button.
- (Skip this step if using iPhone 3G) While you're there, scroll down to Model, if the first two letters start with MC, this jailbreak will not work for you. If the Model starts with something else (MB, etc.) you're fine.
- Download Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 for Windows | Download Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 for Mac
- (Skip this step if using iPhone 3G) Download the iOS 4.0 firmware file by going here, clicking on the second drop down bar, and finding iPod touch 2G (4.0/8A293).(This is not a mistake)
- (Skip this step if using iPod touch 2G) Download the iOS 4.0 firmware file by going here, clicking on the second drop down bar, and finding iPhone 3G (4.0/8A293).(This is not a mistake)
- Open Reds0w and click the Browse button. Point it to the file you downloaded from one of the two above steps. Click Next.
- Make sure Install Cydia is checked and click Next
- Plug your device into your computer and turn it fully off. Click Next.
- Now be ready to follow the on-screen instructions. They will tell you what to do with your buttons. Make sure you follow them properly. (If you think you've messed up, stop, close Redsn0w, and hold down both home and power buttons for about 15 seconds until your device restarts. Then repeat above steps.)
- Now wait until Redsn0w is finished doing its thing.

US Library of Congress Officially Legalizes Jailbreak

Some of the cost compelling quotes from the 250-page recommendation:
Ultimately, Apple’s position with respect to harm to the market for and value of its firmware boils down to Apple’s conclusion that “the value of the iPhone, and hence the software embedded in it, is substantially diminished when the integrity and functionality of that software is compromised by jailbreaking, when Apple is left to deal with the problems that ensue, and when the positive feedback loops enabled by the App Store and the iPhone Developer Program are compromised.”
Apple’s objections to the installation and use of “unapproved” applications appears to have nothing to do with its interests as the owner of copyrights in the computer programs embodied in the iPhone, and running the unapproved applications has no adverse effect on those interests. Rather, its objections relate to its interests as a manufacturer and distributor of a device, the iPhone. The recommendation does not only apply to Apple devices. Android powered phones, like the Driod and HTC phones, can also be jailbroken (A.K.A. rooted).
Though this does not mean that Apple will stop jailbreakers by issuing updates for holes in software.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation, the largest group fighting for a "free" electronic world, estimates that there are about 1 million jailbroken iDevices. This number will likely only continue to increase because of this recommendation.

iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G iOS 4.0GM Jailbreak
The Dev Team has released the redsn0w beta jailbreak for all iPhone 3Gs and iPod touch 2Gs on the firmware 4.0GM.
This jailbreak will, by default turn on multitasking and homescreen wallpapers which is not normally allowed on these two devices by Apple.
If you are using a carrier unlock, do not upgrade to 4.0GM firmware until the official 4.0, and ultrasn0w unlock, are released as it will update your baseband as well as not allowing you to hacktivate your device.
If you've managed to keep the old 04.26.08 baseband on iOS 4.0GM, the Dev Team recently released an ultrasn0w unlock, see more details on it here.

Jailbreak on 3.1.2 with blackra1n

This jailbreak will not allow iPhone users to unlock for use on other carriers so if you rely on an unlock, stay with firmware 3.1.1.
For iPod touch 3rd Generation, the jailbreak is tethered so every time you fully turn off your device, you'll need to plug it back in and repeat steps 2-5.
- Make sure you're on firmware 3.1.2 by going into Settings, General, About, and then Version.
- Download and open blackra1n RC3:
Windows - http://theipodtouchproject.googlecode.com/files/blackra1n.exe Mac - http://theipodtouchproject.googlecode.com/files/blackra1n.zip - Plug in your device into your computer.
- Press Make it ra1n on your computer.
- Wait until the an image of a man with iPhone's spinning around him comes up. If you don't get the image, just restart your device, close blackra1n, and repeat steps 3 and 4.
- Once your device reboots, you should see a blackra1n icon on your homescreen, tap on it.
- Make sure you're connected to the internet, select Cydia, and tap on install.
- Blackra1n will now download and install Cydia, once it's done, Cydia will be on your homescreen.
