Jailbreak on 3.1.2 with blackra1n

Geohot has released blackra1n RC3 which now jailbreaks all iPod touches and iPhones (including iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3rd Generation).

This jailbreak will not allow iPhone users to unlock for use on other carriers so if you rely on an unlock, stay with firmware 3.1.1.

For iPod touch 3rd Generation, the jailbreak is tethered so every time you fully turn off your device, you'll need to plug it back in and repeat steps 2-5.

  1. Make sure you're on firmware 3.1.2 by going into Settings, General, About, and then Version.
  2. Download and open blackra1n RC3:
    Windows - http://theipodtouchproject.googlecode.com/files/blackra1n.exe
  3. Mac - http://theipodtouchproject.googlecode.com/files/blackra1n.zip
  4. Plug in your device into your computer.
  5. Press Make it ra1n on your computer.
  6. Wait until the an image of a man with iPhone's spinning around him comes up. If you don't get the image, just restart your device, close blackra1n, and repeat steps 3 and 4.
  7. Once your device reboots, you should see a blackra1n icon on your homescreen, tap on it.
  8. Make sure you're connected to the internet, select Cydia, and tap on install.
  9. Blackra1n will now download and install Cydia, once it's done, Cydia will be on your homescreen.

GeoHot going Full Force on Apple

GeoHot, the famous creator of Blackra1n, among many other jailbreaks, is moving full force on Apple's new software. The recently released iPad was shown by GeoHot running in verbose mode, a key sign that the iPad will be 'pwned for life.' Meaning that it will always be open for 3rd party modifications.

Two days later, GeoHot released images of iPod touch and iPhone OS firmware 4.0 jailbroken, which has not even been released to the public yet (now with homescreen background images allowed by Apple.)

More details are still to be released on the jailbreak for the iPad and OS 4.0.

    Download and Install Install0us 2.5

Update: Installous (which has nothing to do with Install0us) has released a 3.0 version to their app. It has many upgrades from Install0us 2.5 and is easier to install. Find the new Installous 3.1.1 here.

Install0us 2.5.2, the beta version of Installous has been shut down. You can find more information about that, see the Install0us blog. With the project went the repo that had the application. This will show you how to get Install0us 2.5.2 without the repo.

    2. Using SSH, move the deb file into the /private/var/root directory on your device.
    3. Go into Cydia on your device and install Terminal.
    4. Open Terminal and type in login then press the return key.
    5. Type in root then press the return key.

      Update Installous Apps

Installing apps using Installous can be a real pain because they don't receive updates - until now. Using Updatr, you can easily check which of your apps are fully updated and which ones need to be updated. Once you find the apps you need to update, they can be easily updated using Apptrackr.

      How to Install
      1. Open Cydia, tap on Manage then on Sources.
      2. Tap on Edit, then Add
      3. Type in 'http://cydia.xsellize.com' and tap on Add Source
      4. Once it's done, go to the search tab and type in Updatr.
      5. Install Updatr and go to your home screen
      6. Open Updatr, let it refresh your list. (This may take awhile)
      7. Now you will be able to see your entire list of apps that need to be updated.
      8. To update, select each app individually and tap on View on Apptrackr.
      9. Then select the latest version of the app, download, and then install.
